As math teachers, we are deeply concerned about students? lack of motivation, especially for doing mathematical exercises and being active during lessons, because of the significant positive relationship between motivation and mathematics accomplishment (Lim and Champan, 2015). In addition, traditional assessment methods often lack transparency, leaving students uncertain about teacher?s expectations, personal progress and areas to improve.
Both motivation and assessment are closely linked to game use in education, as Yu et al. (2020) have summarized. In this context, we distinguish two main concepts: serious games and gamification. While serious games refer to games ?designed to convey learning material in being played through? (Deterding et al., 2011, pp. 10), gamification is defined as ?the use of game design elements in non-game contexts? (Deterding et al., 2011, pp. 10). Serious games imply a full-game design, and gamification implies adding game components?as points and badges and game mechanics as progression, rewards and feedback?in a non-game context. In summary, gamification utilizes game elements to enhance the experience in a non-game-related activity, whereas serious games are whole games designed for specific purposes beyond entertainment.
For our research, we added game elements to a mathematics course, to provide students with a transparent assessment, let them know their achievements, clarify our expectations and enhance motivation.

This paper introduces the design of a gamified environment for the Mathematics course (first semester of study) in the first year of engineering careers at Lodz University of Technology, Poland. We desired to motivate and encourage our students to work in teams and complete the tasks assigned during the lessons related to derivatives. Deterding et al. (2011) defined gamification as using game design elements in non-game contexts. It involves integrating game components, such as points, badges, and mechanics like progression and rewards, into contexts that are not game-related. Authors such as Kapp (2013) suggest using gamification to encourage learners, motivate them and /or influence them.
Also, gamification emerges as a promising approach for meeting the three basic needs identified by Ryan and Deci (2000) in the Self-Determination Theory: autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Therefore, considering Kapp's (2013) suggestion and in light of basic human needs, we developed a gamified environment to implement during some maths lessons.
